CROCHETED CAT “ROLLIES”
Crochet hook size G or H
About 4 yards worsted weight yarn (scraps are good)
Large eye jumbo tapestry needle
Cotton balls
Row 1: Make a slip knot. Chain 3, work 9 double crochet stitches in the stitch farthest from your hook, join the row with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain, chain 2.
Row 2: Starting in the same stitch the chain is attached to, work 1 half double crochet in each stitch around [9 half doubles]. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch, chain 2. (Ball should start to curl around your thumb as you work.)
Row 3: Work the same as Row 2, but don't do the final chain 2. Cut the yarn leaving at least 6" for sewing up and pull the end through the last stitch.
Insert a cotton ball. Thread yarn end into a large eyed tapestry needle. Run the needle in and out along the top edge of the last row of stitches. Pull tight to draw the ball closed and tie off. Weave in yarn end and cut off any excess. Done!
NOTE: I save my 12" to 1 yard yarn scraps for these. Tie 2 or more colors of together and start crocheting. They're fine made with only one color but kitties find them more interesting made with 2 or more colors. There is more action to catch their eye as they roll.

I volutneer at a no-kill animal shelter plus have six cats of my own! I'm thinking these will be great for my favorite kitties. I might add a bit of catnip for added exctiement!

A cute and easy toy to make for my kitties. I may add a bit of catnip before I close mine.
A great way to use up scraps as well!
Thank you!

Hi! Thanks for posting this pattern. Just curious though because I knit endlessly but don't crochet often ... in the start-up, do you mean to join in a ring and do 9 doubles in the ring? You said do 9 doubles in the "stitch" farthest from the hook. Just need a little extra instruction, sorry!

I just made a few for my cats, what a fun projects! I used polyfil instead of a cotton ball (it's what I had handy) and dipped the filler in valerian root powder before stuffing the balls. (cats love the stuff) They are having a WONDERFUL time.
