Vicki’s Bunny Egg CoverSize 7 double points
Worsted weight yarn (about 15 yards)
Large eye tapestry needle
Plastic egg
Gauge: 4.5 stitches = 1" Finished bunny is 4.5" tall.
Cast on 20 stitches on double point needles.
Divide your stitches over three double points. Put 10 stitches on the first needle, and 5 stitches each on needle two and three. (Or, if you wish to use only two double points, place 10 stitches on each needle.)
Join and work in the round. Your yarn tail marks the beginning of the row.
1. Knit 2, purl 2 in ribbing for 2 rows.
2. Knit 4 rows.
3. Knit 4, kf&b, M1, kf&b, turn. Work only the last 5 stitches to make the tail.
Tail:a) Knit 5, turn. Repeat.
b) Skp, knit 1, k2tog, turn.
c) Sk2p, then just continue knitting to the end of the row and the marker.
4. Knit 4, pick up 1 stitch on side of tail, knit 1, pick up 1 stitch on other side of tail, knit to end.
5. Knit 5, k2tog, knit to next to last stitch of row. Move the last stitch from needle 3 to needle 1 to set up for decreases. When you get to the next to the last stitch on needle 1, move the last stitch to needle 2. Do this again when knitting decrease rows 8 and 10.
6. *S2kp2, knit 7* repeat once. (16 stitches)
7. Knit 3 rows. On last row move stitches for decrease.
8. *S2kp2, knit 5* repeat once. (12 stitches)
9. Repeat row 7. On last row move stitches for decrease.
10. *S2kp2, knit 3* repeat once. (8 stitches)
11. Knit 1 row.
Divide stitches between 2 needles placing 4 stitches on each needle. Hold the 2 needles together as if to do a 3 needle bind off.
12. Then K2tog using 1 stitch from the front needle and 1 stitch from the back needle. Repeat across. (4 sts)
13. Using the first 2 stitches, knit the ear. (Ignore the remaining 2 stitches for the moment.)
Ear:a) Knit 1, M1, knit 1, turn.
b) Knit 3, turn. Repeat 7 more times.
c) S2kp2. (1 stitch left)
Cut yarn leaving at least a 1 yard tail. (You’ll use this yarn to knit the second ear.) Thread the yarn end into a tapestry needle. Go through the remaining stitch to secure and run the needle through the stitches down the side of the ear. Your yarn will now be at the same level with the remaining 2 stitches on your needles.
14. Using this yarn tail, knit a second ear with the instructions above. (Don’t pull too tight on the first stitch or it will crumple the first ear.)
After the second ear is done, thread the yarn end into a tapestry needle, pull the yarn through the last stitch, run it down the side of the ear as before and secure the end. The bunny is done except for weaving in the cast on tail. Insert a plastic egg inside your bunny. A hard boiled egg or a Cadbury cream egg might fit too.
You can knit bunnies with any weight of yarn to make them tiny or huge. Choose a needle size to suit the yarn you're using.
